Increasing pressure on the environment, rising consumer concerns about sustainability, and governmental initiatives are inviting organizations to adopt certified compostable packaging.
Compostability standards and certification marks
Currently, there are no international standard specifying the conditions of composting of biodegradable plastics; however, there are several national and regional standards, such as:
- the European standard prEN 17427:2020, the Australian standard AS 5810-2010, the French standard NF T51-800 linked to the “home compostable” seedling logo
- the European standards EN13432 and EN 14995, the American standards ASTM 6400 and ASTM 6868, the Australian standards AS 4736-2006 linked to the “industrial compostable” seedling logo
TÜV Austria’s and DIN CERTCO are certifications bodies internationally recognized to deliver compostability certification (e.g. home OK compost logo, industrial TUV compostable logo). The Seedling logo is a registered trademark owned by European Bioplastics proving the product’s claims of biodegradability and compostability have been tested (Australasian Bioplastics, 2017).

Mérieux NutriSciences performs compostability studies that grant the European, North American, and Australian certification marks. Our laboratories are recognized by TÜV Austria’s and DIN CERTCO to support the obtention of a wide range of logos and test marks such as ABA seedling logos (industrial and home), Ok Compost and Ok Compost HOME, DIN-Geprüft test mark (industrial and home), and BPI compostable mark.
All tests are carried out in accordance with UNI EN 13432 standards and other international standards.
